Fertility Enhances Beauty
A women’s facial features actually change each month to make her appear more beautiful when she’s at her highest stage of fertility. According to researchers at the University of Newcastle in the UK, shifts in appearance include variation in lip size and color, eye pupil dilation and changes in skin color and tone. This follows a previous study suggesting women’s ears, fingers, breasts and other soft tissue areas become more symmetrical at times of peak fertility.
In the more recent study, males and females rated photographs taken of women during the peak stages of fertility (8 to 14 days into the menstrual cycle) and after those levels dropped (17 to 25 days post-cycle). All judges rated the fertile women as more beautiful about 51 to 59 percent of the time. Lead study author S. Craig Roberts wrote that the subtle facial changes “can have substantial reproductive benefits if they raise value in the mating market.” Previous studies have also found that women in fertility prime become more flirtatious and give off odors men find alluring. Interestingly, Canadian researcher Maryanne Fisher found that during their most fertile stages, women also become more critical of other women.
